GROM

Ciao! Every week, I try a new gelato shop in Rome, throughout all the different neighborhoods. Each shop is evaluated by flavor, service and price. Each shop can be rated up to 30 points: 10 possible for each category. This week: Grom. Grom is a chain and has a few different locations in Rome. Check out their website for addresses!

Flavor: I was a little skeptical to try Grom when I first heard about it, because I generally associate chains with lower quality. This is not the case with Grom. Their flavor and quality is exceptional, I was very pleased. I've been trying to really crazy flavors of gelato lately so when I went to Grom I just wanted vanilla. But I didn't get just any vanilla. I got Madagascar Vanilla. It was some of the best gelato I've tasted. It's sad how long I could talk about how good this vanilla ice cream was!

Here are their flavors:

Classics

  • Creme
  • Coffee
  • Creme di Grom (Grom's own flavor of caramel, cookies and chocolate chunks)
  • Fiordilatte
  • Yogurt
  • Stracciatella
  • Pistachio
  • Hazelnut
  • Dark Chocolate
  • Chocolate
  • Bacio
The Specialties
  • Creme Brulee
  • Licorice
  • Coco and Chocolate
  • Madagascar Vanilla
  • Fruit
  • Lemon
  • Strawberry
  • Pink grapefruit
Le granite Sicilliane (Sicilian Ice, it's not gelato but ice and flavoring. So good!)
  • Lemon
  • Pomegranate
  • Strawberry

Flavor Score: 9

Price: The prices are very reasonable considering the quality of the gelato. Here's their prices:

Cones: 2.50 (2 flavors), 3.50 (2 flavors), 4.50 (3 flavors)

Cup: 2.50 (2 flavors), 3.50 (2 flavors), 4.50 (3 flavors), 5.50 (4 flavors)

Sicilian Ice: 3 euro for a medium, 4 euro for a large

Price Score: 8

Service: There were many things I liked about Grom as soon as I walked through the door. First, it's very clean and the people are very friendly. What's different about Grom than anywhere else is that instead of looking at all the gelato flavors and choosing which one you want, you look at the menu which has all the flavors divided into categories: Classics, Specialties and Fruit. You then order and pay and then move down the line to get your gelato. Grom is by far the most efficient and organized gelato shop in Rome and probably all of Italy, too.

Service Score: 10

Overall, if you only had a short time in Rome I would definitely recommend going to Grom. There are several locations so you're bound to stumble across one eventually. The flavors are the great, the prices are reasonable and the service is great. I'm a fan.

Overall Score: 27
